Making Waves: Spring Rowing on Lake Hartwell
How Spring Rowing Training Drives Tourism, Economic Impact, and Community Growth

In February and March of 2025, the Clemson Area Chamber was proud to host rowing teams from across the country for their spring training. While many think of our lake as a summer playground, these elite athletes recognize it as one of the premier training grounds in the rowing world.
The 2025 Training Season by the Numbers:
- 26 Teams Hosted: We welcomed programs from top-tier universities and clubs nationwide.
- 1,131 Athletes: A massive influx of talent and energy to our local shores.
- 100 Coaches and Support Staff: The dedicated professionals who keep these programs running.
- 7-Night Average Stay: These teams didn't just pass through; they moved in.
A Significant Economic Engine
The impact of these visits goes far beyond the water. By hosting these teams during the "shoulder season" of February and March, we hopefully filled hotel rooms, packed our local restaurants, and kept our retail shops bustling during months that are historically quieter.
With over 1,200 visitors staying for an average of a full week, the economic ripple effect provided a vital boost to our local workforce and tax base. This season proved once again that Lake Hartwell is not just a scenic backdrop, but one of our most valuable economic assets.
As we move into 2026, the Chamber remains committed to fostering these types of high-impact events that showcase our world-class hospitality and drive our local economy forward.
